A Voice for Prosthetics: Raising Awareness for Ukrainian Victims

Target USA CUP isn’t all just about soccer. In a heart-warming display of compassion and determination, Drew Rohner, Senior at Sycamore High School and player for Cincinnati United, decided to take action and make a positive impact on the Ukrainian victims of the Russian invasion.

During the 2023 edition of Target USA CUP, Drew’s team played against FC Minaj, a youth soccer club from a suburb of Uzhhorod, Ukraine. Attending the game were several severely wounded Ukrainian soldiers who happened to be in Minnesota to receive prosthetics.

"These soldiers, some of whom are barely older than myself, have faced unimaginable challenges due to the war. It was impossible not to think about their unfortunate circumstances, having lost limbs at such a young age. However, as I delved deeper into their stories, I realized that these soldiers were considered fortunate compared to many others."

Currently interested in biomedical engineering, with a focus on prosthetics, Drew knew he had to do something. That’s why he started the fundraiser “A Voice for Prosthetics”  on behalf of the Protez Foundation.

The Protez Foundation (protez – a Ukrainian word meaning prosthesis in English) is a Nonprofit Organization that provides care for Ukrainians who have lost limbs and need prosthetics. The goal of their work is to help children, civilians, and soldiers who have lost limbs as a result of the war and gift them high quality prosthetics free of charge.

Drew’s story and compassion to be a voice for this cause is truly inspiring. If you are interested in Drew’s Fundraiser and the Protez Foundation, explore the links below!
