Back for their third appearance at the USA CUP, Global FC isn’t just a soccer team — they’re a family. Representing 18 countries and rooted in Kansas City, Missouri, this U19 squad embodies the tournament’s spirit of international unity. “Even though we weren’t born together or raised together, we’re still a family at the end of the day,” said Abulfadel “Abu” Alethari, who has been with the club for a decade after arriving from Iraq.
Global FC was founded by Maria, who played in the USA CUP herself more than 15 years ago. Inspired by her experience and driven by a passion to create opportunities for others, she started the club to serve refugee and immigrant youth — especially those who couldn’t afford the high costs of competitive soccer. Funded through sponsorships and community support, the program offers more than just access to the sport. It offers belonging.
Players from Iran, Somalia, Sudan, Congo, Trinidad, the U.S., and beyond all train together in Kansas City. Some have been teammates for five, six, even eight years. While cultural and language differences can sometimes be a challenge, the players say they always find a way to connect — usually through soccer, English, and mutual respect. “Sometimes there’s a language barrier, but we always try to include everyone,” said Abu. “You learn so much from each other.”
After a heartbreaking finals loss in 2022 and a quarterfinal exit last year, this year’s squad is hungry. With three commanding wins already under their belt, they play again tomorrow in the knockout rounds. “This year, we win. Third time’s the charm,” said Abu. Many players, including Abu, hope to continue their careers in college — whether that’s Division I, II, III, or JUCO. “If soccer’s your passion, you never give up on it. Any level, any path — just keep playing,” he said. For Global FC, the USA CUP is more than a tournament. It’s a homecoming, a proving ground, and a launchpad — all at once.
